The concerto transcriptions of Johann Sebastian Bach date from his second period at the court in Weimar — It is thought that most of the transcriptions were probably made in — Their publication by C. Johann Sebastian Bach was a court musician in Weimar from to Most of these transcriptions were based on concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. Around Johann Bernhard BachJohann Sebastian's second cousin, copied 12 of the concerto transcriptions in a single manuscript. The sequence of the concertos in this manuscript is possibly as intended by the composer.
For the organ transcriptions there is no known sequence that may go back to Bach's time. Wilhelm Friedemann Bach later wrote on this manuscript that it was one of his own compositions, copied by his father.
In the 20th century the assertion by the son was shown to be incorrect, and the transcription was attributed to the father. The publication of these transcriptions by C. Peters in the s and by the Bach Gesellschaft in the s played a decisive role in the Vivaldi revival of the twentieth century.
Bach's concerto transcriptions reflect not only his general interest in and assimilation of musical forms originating in Italy, in particular the concertos of his Venetian contemporary Antonio Vivaldibut also the particular circumstances of his second period of employment — at the court in Weimar. Wilhelm Ernst's Lutheran piety contrasted with his younger brother's alcoholism. On Johann Ernst's death inhe was succeeded as coregent by his elder son Ernst Augustwho lived with his younger stepbrother, Prince Johann Ernstoutside the ducal Wilhelmsburg in the Rotes Schloss.
A talented amateur musician, from an early age Prince Johann Ernst had been taught the violin by the court violinist Gregor Christoph Eilenstein. Johann Ernst studied the keyboard with Bach's distant cousin Johann Gottfried Waltherafter he became organist at the Stadtkirche in Weimar in The following year, when Bach himself was appointed as organist in Weimar in the ducal chapel or Himmelsburghe not only had at his disposal the recently renovated chapel organ but also the organ in the Stadtkirche.
In the WilhelmsburgWilhelm Ernst had already revived the court orchestra, of which Bach eventually became Concertmaster in As well as music-making in the WilhelmsburgBach was almost certainly involved in the parallel more secular musical events in the Rotes Schloss organised by August Ernst and Johann Ernst.
Harpsichords were available to Bach at both venues. After the death of their father inWilhelm Ernst and his younger brother Johann Ernst had become the co-ruling Dukes of Saxe-Weimar. In Bach had served for a few months as a violinist in Johann Ernst's orchestra. By that time Duke Wilhelm Ernst had become, all but in name, the only ruler of the Duchy.
In Bach applied before the Duke, and entered into service as organist and chamber musician, on the expense of both the Wilhelmsburg and Rotes Schloss courts. He tutored Ernst August, who, on attaining majority inbecame the co-ruling Duke.Psy100 utm
His half-brother had even more musical talents: as a youngster he had learned to play the violin from his valet Gregor Christoph Eilenstein. Bach's cousin Johann Gottfried Waltherwho had become organist at Weimar's town church intaught the Prince keyboard, and, fromcomposition.
The first documented evidence of Bach's engagement with the concerto genre can be dated to aroundduring his second period in Weimar, when he made a hand copy of the continuo part of Albinoni's Sinfonie e concerti a 5Op.
Earlier compositions had been brought back to Weimar from Italy by the deputy KapellmeisterJohann Wilhelm Dreseduring his stay there in — In the virtuoso violinist Johann Georg Pisendel visited Weimar: he had studied with Torelli and is likely to have acquainted Bach with more of the Italian concerto repertoire.

And if we include the concerto transcriptions for solo organ BWVVivaldi and the Duke hold an even more persuasive monopoly on Bach's transcription sources: just one of the organ transcription sources is the work of a composer other than Vivaldi or Ernst, and the authenticity of that one has been doubted.

And the fact of the matter is that, though Marcello had a certain influence in Italian music circles, he was not really a particularly fine composer he was as much mathematician as musicianand, unlike Vivaldi, cannot be said to have exerted any real influence on Bach. One is therefore tempted to speculate that Bach chose to transcribe the Marcello oboe concerto perhaps even just to test his own skill -- with an inferior source, his adaptive acumen would have to be all the sharper.
Bach - BWV 974 - Adagio (Bach/Marcello) sheet music for Brass Quartet
And as he was not at all averse to altering Vivaldi's music when making the transcriptions, imagine how much more willing he would be to edit, refine, and rewrite the music of a really second-rate composer! The Marcello-Bach concerto is in the usual three movements of an Italian instrumental concerto. Here, the second movement the Adagio, has a limber solo line atop steady eighth notes.Assignment on smart watch

The difficulty rating system that Piano Street uses enables me to search by difficulty level for pieces at my students' various playing levels. It is helpful that many of the scores include an audio clip of the piece being played. I have recommended to my advanced students that they also join Piano Street since getting sheet music from there is a much less expensive alternative to ordering and paying for the music.

According to the Haynes Catalog several c3's in the last movement suggest C minor was the original key. Contents 1 Performances 1. Performer Pages Karl Ristenpart conductor.Bach's keyboard version was published as an arrangement of a concerto by Antonio Vivaldi in the 19th century.
In the 20th and 21st centuries the concerto developed into a well-established repertoire piece, as well as an oboe concerto as performed on keyboard. In his Weimar period —17 Johann Sebastian Bach arranged several concertos by Venetian composers, most of them by Antonio Vivaldifor solo keyboard, known as his Weimar concerto transcriptions.
Vivaldi's Op. The Prince, who also composed Italianate concertos, presumably encouraged Bach to produce solo keyboard arrangements of such works. As the Prince left Weimar in July it is estimated that most of Bach's solo keyboard arrangements of Italian and Italianate concertos originated in the period from July to July That is, at least those arrangements that could be performed on a harpsichord without pedalboardwhile the Weimar court organ which would be needed for arrangements including pedals such as BWV — would have been unavailable for undergoing repairs in this period.
Bach's autograph of the solo keyboard arrangement is lost, but the arrangement was copied around by Bach's second cousin Johann Bernhardas the third item in a manuscript containing 12 of Johann Sebastian's keyboard transcriptions of Italian and Italianate concertos. In Johann Bernhard's son Johann Ernst wrote a title page for this collection, suggesting that the collection contained Vivaldi arrangements for organ exclusively.
He may have intended this title page for the first concerto in the collection only which was indeed an arrangement of a Vivaldi concertobut an unknown hand later added the number "XII" before the title, thus causing the misunderstanding that all 12 were Vivaldi arrangements.
Bach as the arranger. That copy, specifying harpsichord as the intended instrument for the arrangement, originated after Johann Bernhard's, but may have been copied from an earlier stage of Bach's arrangement. The ornamentation as indicated in Bach's keyboard version of the concerto works well on harpsichord, but is less suitable for performance on an early 18th-century oboe.
Nonetheless Bach's ornamentation has been used for 20th-century publications of the oboe concerto — the ornamentation causes fewer problems when performed on a modern oboe.
This manuscript writes the composer's name as "Marcello" without specifying a first name: as Alessandro's brother Benedetto was far better known as a composer by the name Marcello, later generations would interpret the title of the manuscript as referring to the better known of the "Marcello" composers.
The concerto survives in different printed and manuscript versions, one of these in C minor. The concerto has also been recorded played on a piccolo trumpet - a notoriously challenging transcription due to the breath control and tight embouchure required for its sustained passages in the higher register.
